Legacy
REKANA means happiness, and a lot to me.
It’s a name my father gave me. I loved it so much that I saved it for my retirement plan, a clothing brand. REKANA (meaning happiness) – which has now become a fashion brand with designs inspired by our culture, traditional elements, personal stories and, contemporary take on African fashion.
I intend to make my last name a legacy. But today, I wrote a note to myself;
Dear creative,
just because others don’t understand what you are creating, doesn’t make it meaningless. Follow your heart, and not the words of others just to live up to their expectations.
Yes you are building a legacy, and you have to be intentional about everything you do, but don’t take yourself so serious. I get it that the internet has subjected us to being a commodity and our self-worth quantified by one’s social media presence, just remember we are all a bunch of ants trying to chase the same things. So lighten up, train yourself not to care about money or legacy, but focus on providing value instead, and how people can use it over and over again.
Most times, people who don’t like/comment, support you and discourage you may not actually be bad people who intentionally want to destroy your dreams. Sometimes, they just don’t understand why you do what you do, so they voice out their concerns, which may make them seem dissenting.
So free yourself from pressure that can slowly lead to depression, and create something not to leave a legacy, you won’t be here to see it anyway, but to be of use. And don’t become too dependent on the stuff you create and own — otherwise, the stuff will own you.
And lastly, don’t let objections (good or bad) from others become your truth and limit you from creating what you want in life. Take breaks but NEVER stop creating…
